Hi, my family is building a small cruising sailboat, and we're trying to decide what fuel to use for our stove. I thought propane would be a good choice, but I read in a book that using propane on the boat could be dangerous. Does anyone out there have any advice?

We have both a propane stove and hot water heater, love them both.  You need to make sure you use an approved marine propane stove and that you have a properly vented propane locker for your tank/tanks.

You may also consider a propane "sniffer" or leak detector in your bilge.  Other than that it's pretty hard to beat propane as far as cooking and odor.  The alcohol stoves smell horrible IMO.

Propane is the most common cooking fuel on boats.

Install per ABYC A-1 MARINE LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS (LPG) SYSTEMS
